What the gummy boom doesn’t tell you… And what the science shows.
The supplement aisle has never looked more like a candy store. Walk into any pharmacy, open any wellness app, or scroll through a DTC storefront today, and you will find gummies stacked high, cheerfully packaged, infinitely varied.
The numbers confirm the moment: the global gummy supplements market was valued at over $12 billion in 2025 and is expected to grow at a double-digit CAGR through to 2033 1. Consumers are asking for them. Retailers are shelving them prominently. Your competitors are launching them. The pressure is completely understandable.
But before you greenlight that SKU, it is worth pausing on something that rarely makes it into the trend reports: the view from the formulator’s bench, the manufacturer’s floor, and the marketplace seller dashboard. And for brands building for the long term, these deserve a closer look.
In gummies, there’s little room for efficacy
Gummies are, at their core, a confectionery matrix: gelatin or pectin-based, high in moisture, usually acidic, and inherently heterogeneous. Every structural requirement of that matrix – the binders, sweeteners, humectants, flavouring agents, and pH adjusters – competes directly with active ingredient payload 7. There is simply less room for what your consumers are actually paying for.
This hits hardest with bulky minerals. Mineral salts like calcium and magnesium are often reduced in gummy formulations to prevent bitter off-notes from ruining the taste experience 8. Iron and many botanical extracts are challenging to incorporate into the gummy matrix due to taste-masking and unstable interactions with the rest of the gel matrix 9, 10
Gummies are almost universally sweetened with 2-8 grams of sugar per serving, which can stack up high with multiple supplement consumption 2 ,3. Sugar-free versions swap in sugar alcohols like erythritol or sorbitol, which come with their own GI side effects 4, 5. Citric acid, used universally for tartness, can erode tooth enamel with repeated daily exposure 2, 6.
If your brand is positioning around clinical relevance, condition-specific formulas, precision nutrition and high-potency stacks, the gummy format actively works against your core promise.
Manufacturing degrades the ingredients your consumers care about
Gummy manufacturing is a hot process. Temperatures during production routinely reach levels that compromise the actives consumers are most excited about: probiotics, certain enzymes, omega-3 fatty acids, heat-sensitive botanicals.
The biggest challenge is finding ingredients that are efficacious and can withstand the manufacturing medium and everything being done to them during production. Reduce the sugar content, and the formulation becomes even more constrained, because every substitution introduces new stability variables into an already fragile system.
Probiotics are the clearest illustration of this. Live cultures are acutely sensitive to heat, oxygen, and moisture, exactly the conditions that gummy manufacturing creates. Delivering a meaningful, shelf-stable probiotic count in a gummy requires extraordinary microencapsulation engineering. And even then, it is a constant battle.
Omega-3s face a different version of the same problem. Lipid-heavy fish or algal oils are prone to oxidation in high-temperature, open-matrix processing environments. The result is rancidity risk and degraded potency, neither of which shows up on your label, but both of which eventually show up in your reviews.
When you launch a gummy carrying these ingredients, you take on formulation risk that is very hard to fully communicate on a label and very easy for an informed consumer or health influencers to expose.
“Overage” – a dangerous band-aid for shelf stability
While tablets, capsules, and powders often maintain stability for up to 24 months, gummies typically carry a shelf life closer to 18 months – a reflection of the unique formulation and stability challenges inherent to the format. To ensure a gummy still meets its label claim 18 months post-manufacture, manufacturers often resort to what the industry calls “overage”: adding 20%, 30%, or even 50% more active ingredient than the label states, to buffer against degradation over time.
In fact, the USP (United States Pharmacopeia) proposed overages of 145% and 150% for folic acid and vitamin C in gummies, when overages are limited to 50% for tablets and capsules 11. It sounds like a reasonable engineering solution until you think through the implications.
The fundamental issue is the matrix itself. A gummy is essentially a water-based gel, and high water activity allows for greater molecular mobility, which accelerates the chemical degradation that breaks down nutrients, often promoting microbial growth 11, 12.
Gummies are also almost always acidic, flavoured with citric or malic acid to mask the metallic taste of minerals, and this low-pH environment is particularly hostile to sensitive actives like Vitamin B12 and Vitamin A. Oxygen exposure is greater in gummies than in sealed capsule formats, especially when packaging is not completely airtight, leading to oxidative degradation of fat-soluble compounds 13.
The overage solution creates its own tightrope. Too little overage, and you fall out of label claim at expiry, a regulatory problem. Too much active, and your costs erode your margins. Overages can also risk toxicity, particularly with fat-soluble vitamins like A and D where therapeutic and toxic windows are narrower than most consumers realise. These two can come into conflict in ways that stability studies reveal only after the fact.
And beyond potency, even gummies that do not technically expire can harden, discolour, develop a sugary coating, or lose their chew over time. That is a consumer experience problem that shows up at the worst possible moment: on an online product review.
The e-commerce and logistics reality nobody warns you about
Gummies are uniquely vulnerable in transit. They are temperature-sensitive in a way that capsules and tablets simply are not 14. Heat excursions during warehousing or last-mile delivery, a parcel sitting on a summer doorstep can cause gummies to melt, fuse, or bloom. This is not merely cosmetic. It affects texture, potency, and consumer perception all at once. And for brands selling online or other third-party platforms, the feedback loop is brutally direct.
E-commerce has an unforgiving dynamic: satisfied reviewers push products upward, unsatisfied ones push rankings down. A strong product with a vulnerable delivery format can lose significant momentum if the product deteriorates before reaching customers. Negative reviews citing “gummies arrived melted” or “product was stuck together” are among the most common complaints in the category. They’re also nearly impossible to pre-empt through quality control alone when you cannot control the last mile.
The market is already crowded and getting more so every quarter
Here is the paradox at the heart of the gummy opportunity: the very thing that makes gummies appealing, which is widespread consumer demand, is also what makes them the most commoditised, most competitive, most margin-compressed format in the supplement market.
The barrier to entry for gummy production is low. Private-label gummies are available from dozens of contract manufacturers, with interchangeable flavours, shapes, and basic vitamin blends. Differentiation through formulation is genuinely difficult in a format where active ingredient flexibility is already constrained.
For a brand with a genuine scientific story to tell, launching a gummy means entering a crowded lane in the market with a format that constrains what you can formulate, limits how you can differentiate, and leaves you competing on criteria where your science advantage counts for the least.
The regulatory picture is getting more complicated, not less
The regulatory risk around gummies is increasingly concrete, not theoretical. In the US, the CDC documented approximately 11,000 emergency department visits in children under five linked to unsupervised melatonin gummy ingestion between 2019 and 2022 alone.
The FDA even convened an expert workshop on candy-like supplement formats and the CRN (Council on Responsible Nutrition) to issue new voluntary guidelines specifically for gummy labelling and packaging.
In Europe, additives such as sweeteners and colourants used in a supplement must be individually approved and listed under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, while flavouring agents must comply separately with Regulation (EC) No 1334/2008. Several popular ‘clean label’ alternatives that brands are increasingly relying on, like certain high-purity monk fruit extracts, remain only partially approved as additives or are restricted as novel foods in the EU. Brands building gummy lines today with an eye on international distribution need to map this component-by-component compliance landscape before they commit to a formula.
So, where does this leave you?
None of this is to say that gummies have no place in the supplement market. They do. For basic vitamins, simple single-ingredient formulas, and products aimed at consumers new to supplementation, they offer genuine access and adherence benefits that are real and valuable.
But if your brand is built on a promise of clinical relevance, ingredient quality, and meaningful health outcomes, if your consumer is sophisticated, your formula is complex, and your story depends on science holding up under scrutiny, then the gummy format is working against you on multiple fronts simultaneously.
So, “What format actually serves my formula, my brand, and my consumer best?” is always worth asking before you greenlight your next launch.
What the science actually shows
The challenges above do not affect all dosage forms equally. The table below maps each dimension across the four primary supplement formats: gummies, tablets, softgels, and liquid-filled vegetarian hard capsules based on established formulation science.
